ADC: Where do you get your first ideas for possible exhibitions from and how you know what would visitors attract?
Paola Antonelli: Since my area of focus is the contemporary art, ideas come directly from what I see happening not only in the world of architecture and design, but in the world at large. I am never sure that my exhibition ideas will attract an audience.
What are the big trends in today's design?
I find them very often in the fields of interaction design, critical design, websites, typfaces, biodesign and engineering. Very rarely, also in furniture and product design, but the future is in the hybrid and interdisciplinary collaborations.
Is the best selling chair (the white one-mold-plastic-chair) in the world beautiful?
Ha! You know the answer.
When does an object become a design-classic?
When it becomes an icon and it transcends any personal judgment.
Do you have any ideas which are not at all understood by others - but you still believe in them?
I have devoted my career to make people understand that design is not styling, decoration, and formalism, and that there are many forms of design that are as useful and meaningful and elegant as furniture and product design. I am converting the public little by little, and also the younger generations have grown up with a different perspective. |
